MELAKA, Feb 28 -- A total of RM400,000 has been allocated to upgrade the existing Melaka River Cruise (MRC) jetties and build another four in the first phase of the Sungai Melaka project involving the route from its estuary to Taman Rempah here.

Melaka River and Coastal Development Corporation (PPSPM) chief executive officer Datuk Murad Husin said the allocation which was provided through the heritage charge collection was part of the efforts to provide comfort and ensure the safety of visitors.

He said the jetties would be built as MRC’s new tourism product stations, namely, pit stop cruise through the operations of three special boats and visitors could use the service all day long by purchasing day ticket at RM40.

“A total of 14 jetties will be built under the first phase of MRC. To date, we have eight jetties involving certain locations including in Kampung Hulu, Kampung Morten and the Shore.

“The pit stop cruise tourism product will be launched in May and it is one of the efforts of PPSPM to boost the quality of Melaka’s tourism products since MRC is a state tourism icon,” he told reporters after a monthly PPSPM ‘gotong royong’ programme here, today.

He also added that the implementation of the pit stop cruise would create economic activities for the locals via trading opportunities at the jetties.

Meanwhile, he said PPSPM also planned to provide ‘Iftar’ cruises for tourists keen to experience breaking the fast on a boat at RM50 per person.

However, Murad said the cruises during during Ramadan would depend on the COVID-19 pandemic situation and the implementation of the Movement Control Order (MCO).

Earlier, he said PPSPM always conducted cleaning works along Sungai Melaka to ensure the optimum level of cleanliness.
