KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 19 -- Buoyed by her impressive form in domestic competitions this year, national squash player Aifa Azman is eyeing to stamp her mark at the Malaysia Open which begins at the National Squash Centre in Bukit Jalil on Tuesday

The 19-year-old Kedahan has gained a confidence booster after winning the back-to-back Squash Racquets Association of Malaysia (SRAM) PSA 5 and 6 tournaments in October, for an overall record of 10 victories in 11 matches this year.

“It’s definitely a very good opportunity for me to play a PSA Tour event on home ground. I’m used to the court conditions here and there will be supporters so that is an extra boost for me.

“This is my first US$50,000 (about RM200,000) event in Malaysia, and I’m very excited to go up against the higher seeded players. I am definitely looking forward to this experience and my performance recently has been pretty good," she said in a statement today.

The world number 69 has been drawn against world number 47 Mayar Hany of Egypt in the first round,  and a win will see her take on third seed and world number 31 Yathreb Adel, also from Egypt.

Besides Aifa, the other Malaysian women in the fray are national number two Rachel Arnold, who is drawn to meet Hong Kong’s Tong Tsz Wing in the first round, and Chan Yiwen, who is up against Egypt’s Hana Ramadan.

Meanwhile, Addeen Idrakie, who has received a wildcard for the tournament, is confident of proving his capability after achieving exceptional achievements in the PSA World Tour Bronze event.

The 27-year-old said apart from strengthening himself mentally and physically, he is also preparing by using video analysis.

"I just finished competing in the United States. I’m doing well because I can make it into quarter-finals and semi-finals. I think if I keep working hard and believe in myself and trust my coach, I can step up.

“I am drawn against Hong Kong’s Yip Tsz Fung, and it is good since I will meet Yip in another two tournaments after this,” he told Bernama.
