AGRICULTURE DEPARTMENT, USM COLLABORATE ON EROSION, SEDIMENT CONTROL PLAN

NIBONG TEBAL -- The Agriculture Department is collaborating with Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) to draw up documents and guidelines on an erosion and sediment control plan for farming activities on highlands including in special management areas.

Agriculture Department director-general Datuk Zahimi Hassan said agrofood entrepreneurs, especially in highland areas like Cameron Highlands, Kinta and Lojing, could conduct farming activities sustainably through this strategic cooperation by following the sediment and erosion control plan for highlands, which the department would develop together with USM.

“Highland areas need more intensive land management because they are highly susceptible to erosions and landslides, which lead to environmental pollution and other natural disasters such as flash floods which then lead to loss of lives and property.

“As such, we've forged this cooperation so that we can take early prevention measures, especially in managing water and land conservations on highlands, to prevent untoward incidents such as erosions and landslides,” he told reporters at the USM Engineering Campus in Jalan Transkrian, here today.
