CUSTOMS ENFORCEMENT OFFICER OPENS FIRE TO STOP FLEEING LORRY

JOHOR BAHRU -- A Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) enforcement personnel was forced to open fire to stop a lorry carrying suspected contraband liquor that was trying to evade the authorities here yesterday.

Johor police chief Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat said a Customs enforcement team, assisted by a mobile police vehicle (MPV) team engaged in a 20-kilometre chase with a lorry driven by a 40-year-old driver for an hour from Jalan Danga Bay to the Lima Kedai Toll Road.

He added that the MPV was rammed in the rear by the lorry in the 1.12pm incident, just before the driver was arrested, adding that the lorry and the liquor were seized.

The driver, who possesses two prior records relating to drug and criminal offences, has been remanded for 10 days beginning today under Section 135(1)(E) of the Customs Act 1967, Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, Section 39D of the Arms Act 1960 and Section 353 of the Penal Code.

POLICE SEEKING TWO MEN OVER ATTEMPTED ROBBERY

KUALA LUMPUR -- The police are looking for two local men after they allegedly attempted to rob two foreign women, injuring one of them, in front of a school in Persiaran Dutamas here yesterday, Sentul police chief ACP Beh Eng Lai said.

The police received a report at 8.53 pm about the incident, which occurred a 26-year-old student was walking towards a shopping mall with a friend when she started recording two men with her mobile phone after realising they were behaving suspiciously.

The men, who were riding on a motorcycle with the registration plate WB 9352 P, then rushed at the victim to try to seize her phone but failed. In the ensuing scuffle, the man hit the woman on her back with a tree branch, injuring her.

The women then fled to SK Kiaramas here and sought help from the school's security guards after the men fled. The woman subsequently received outpatient treatment at Kuala Lumpur Hospital for her injuries.

TECHNICIAN FINED RM2,000 FOR POSSESSING FAKE PISTOL

KUALA LUMPUR -- A technician was fined RM2,000 by the Magistrate's Court here today after pleading guilty to possessing a fake pistol bought online two days ago.

Magistrate S. Mageswary passed the sentence on Abdul Rashid Shuhaimi, 29, and ordered the accused to serve a month in jail if in default. The accused paid the fine.

Abdul Rashid was charged with possessing an imitation Glock pistol with a magazine for 128 bullets in a house at Perumahan Rakyat Pantai Permai, Jalan Pantai Dalam, Brickfields here at 3.45 am on April 20.

SCHOOL PRINCIPAL, TECHNICAL DIRECTOR REMANDED OVER FALSE CLAIMS

SHAH ALAM -- Two individuals, a female principal of a national type school, 55, and an IT company technical director, 47, were remanded for three days from today to assist in investigation into the case of submitting false claims of more than RM80,000.

The remand order was issued by Magistrate Nur Faizah Abdul Sani in accordance with Section 18 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009. The two are suspected of committing the offence in August 2020, when the principal held the position of senior assistant of student affairs. 

The man is said to have submitted a falsified invoice for electrical wiring work that was not carried out but confirmed by the principal. Both were arrested at the Selangor MACC Office yesterday.

SAUDI GOVT DONATES AL-QURAN, DATES TO ARMED FORCES

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Saudi Arabian government has donated four tonnes of dates and 1,000 copies of the Al-Quran to the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) in conjunction with the month of Ramadan.

The MAF headquarters said in a statement today that the donation was presented by the Defence Adviser from the Saudi Arabian Embassy in Malaysia, Brig Gen Abdullah Khaled Alyamini to Chief of Defence Force Gen Tan Sri Affendi Buang in a brief ceremony at Wisma Pertahanan here yesterday.

"The armed forces are indeed very grateful to the armed forces and the Government of Saudi Arabia for the contribution, which is a sign of the strong friendship and brotherhood among Muslims, and strengthens the defence diplomacy between the armed forces of both countries," the statement read.

VIDEO OF CARBIDE CANNON ANTICS LANDS FIVE IN COURT

BUKIT MERTAJAM -- A video that went viral on social media depicting the antics of four people, including a minor, playing with a home-made cannon, led to them pleading guilty to various offences linked to their act at the Magistrate's Court here today.

Muhammad Shahrul Izzuan Kamaruzaman, 28, Muhammad Nawar Md Shariff, 28, and the boy pleaded guilty in front of Magistrate Mohd Harith Mohd Mazlan, to the charge of lighting a carbide cannon at the roadside of Permatang Rawa in front of Kedai Makan Pokok Nyok, here at 11pm on April 7.

The fourth accused, Abd Rahman Noorudin, 33, pleaded guilty to the charge of posting the two-minute 20-second video.

The court then fined Muhammad Shahrul Izzuan, Muhammad Nawar and Abd Rahman RM100 each but set May 26 for the hearing of the probation report for the minor before sentence is handed down. The minor was allowed bail of RM1,000 with one surety.

FURNITURE COMPANIES SCAMMED BY FAKE IRB OFFICERS

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Inland Revenue Board (IRB) has revealed that a syndicate has been recently using the names of its officers to procure and purchase assets from furniture companies.

The syndicate even provided two fake name cards with the names of IRB officers to purchase furniture equipment for office use and even provided a fake purchase order document containing details of the types of furniture to be ordered with the fake signature of an IRB officer, the board said in a statement today.

The IRB also reminded the public to be vigilant against scammers impersonating IRB officers to deceive victims and to seek confirmation with the board should they encounter any suspicious phone calls, letters, documents and emails purportedly from the IRB.
