KUALA TERENGGANU, April 3 (Bernama) -- Agro Madani Sales will be held in 14 locations throughout Terengganu in conjunction with Aidilfitri in April.
Terengganu Farmers Organisation Authority (LPP) director, Hasmila Abas said it is to help the people, especially the less privileged, to get food and necessities at lower prices than the market.
Hasmila said that among the products that are sought after by the people ahead of Aidilfitri include local meat, local white rice, chicken and eggs which are sold at 30 to 50 per cent cheaper.
"So far, we have organised three series of Agro Madani Sales around Kuala Terengganu. The public can follow LPP's social media to find out the location of the next event in other districts.
"We chose the location of the event in a crowded area, including mosque, Regional Farmers' Organisation (PPK) outlet and LPP Offices in the district," she said at an Agro MADANI Sales press conference in conjunction with Aidilfitri on the grounds of Pengadang Baru Jamek Mosque, here today.
Hasmila said her organisation is also targeting the arrival of 5,000 visitors with sales of around RM100,000 at each location where the Agro MADANI Sales are held.
According to her, since it was launched last year, the programme has benefited hundreds of thousands of Terengganu residents, most of whom have medium and low incomes.
"Agro MADANI Sales at the Kuala Terengganu Regional Farmers' Association (PPK) outlet yesterday attracted 10,000 visitors and grossed sales exceeding RM100,000.
"This programme not only benefits visitors, but also helps LPP members directly market their agricultural products to customers," he said.
Meanwhile, a chicken trader, Mohd Al Kahuri Rosli, 34, said he managed to sell a tonne of chicken within one hour starting at 7 am.
He said people started flooding the mosque grounds as early as 6.40 am to get chicken at a price of RM7.60 per kilogramme compared to the normal price of between RM10 to RM10.50 per kilogramme.
"I arrived at the sales location at around 6.40 in the morning. Even then there were people waiting at the mosque to buy chicken. I didn't have time to tidy up and the stall was raided," he said.
Meanwhile, a visitor, Siti Munirah Jamil, 45, said she took the opportunity to shop at Agro Madani Sales to save on daily expenses.
She said it was because the price of wet items such as chicken and local meat was much cheaper than on normal days.
"The price of local meat is really cheap... only RM27 per kilogramme compared to RM36 per kilogramme. There is no limit on sales so I bought 10 kilogrammes to save them for rendang for Hari Raya later," he said.
Besides, he also did not miss the opportunity to get four chickens and two trays of eggs sold at a price of RM11.80 per tray for Ramadan, which still has about a week left.
