ASEAN Chairmanship: Urban Infrastructure, Flood Mitigation Among DBKL's Main Focus Areas

24/10/2024 07:49 PM

PUTRAJAYA, Oct 24 (Bernama) -- Urban infrastructure, which includes flood mitigation works in the national capital, is one of the five main focus areas ahead of Malaysia's ASEAN 2025 Chairmanship, according to Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Maimunah Mohd Sharif.

She said that other focus areas are beautification measures, lighting work, road improvement, and the promotion of ASEAN 2025.

“DBKL (Kuala Lumpur City Hall) is collaborating with commercial buildings and hotels to promote and illuminate buildings around the city,” she told reporters after the Federal Territories-level Engagement Session on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) here today, which was also attended by Deputy Economy Minister Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib.

Maimunah said that cleaning of monsoon drains, rivers, and flood retention ponds will be intensified as part of efforts to mitigate the risk of flash floods.

“Prior to this, rivers were cleaned once every three months, but now, as part of our preparations, we will clean them twice a month,” she said.

Meanwhile, Maimunah also announced that an internal task force has been established to oversee the management of Ramadan bazaars at 65 locations across the capital, including the handling of online business license applications.

This follows the directive from the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa, for DBKL to directly manage the festive bazaars.

She added that the task force is made up of licensing, enforcement, engineering, and planning divisions, and is led by an Executive Director.
