KUANTAN, April 6 (Bernama) --  Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp), Pahang took the initiative to set up collection centres for recycled items at Ramadan bazaars around the state to encourage the practice.

Its director, Sharudin Hamid said 13 Ramadan bazaars in 11 districts were involved in the inaugural project which started on the first day of Ramadan.

He said the project benefited the community in saving the environment while the items donated would be recycled and sold, with the proceeds to be handed over to selected welfare homes.

"This project is a continuation of the previous one organised at the mosques, and this year we are holding it at the Ramadan bazaars, with the intention of creating public awareness that second-hand goods also have value and can provide income.

"Many boxes and used oil in containers are thrown away by traders, so we took the initiative so that they can dispose of these in the right place and for charity during the month of Ramadan," he said when contacted here today.

He added that in discussions with the bazaar organisers, they had agreed to donate proceeds from the sale of recycled items to charity homes to be determined later.

Apart from cooking oil and boxes, among items that can be recycled are old newspapers, magazines, books, bottles and electrical appliances.

The locations involved include the Ramadan bazaars at Darul Makmur Stadium (Kuantan), Lurah Semantan (Temerloh), Dataran Tras (Bentong), Pekan town centre, Maran town (Anjung Selera Tasik Maran) and Tanah Rata (Cameron Highlands).

The other collection centres are at the Ramadan bazaars in Bera, namely, at Triang and Kerayong, in Rompin (Bandar Baru and Bandar Muadzam Shah), Bandar Baru Jerantut, Raub town centre and Lipis (Arena Jubli Perak).
